The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me!

Good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter. — Izaak Walton

In 1992, I founded a Recycling Club at my college in Texas. I was a bit early with the idea as I couldn’t really convince anyone to join. Still, I got some funding and put blue recycling bins all over campus. At the time, all we could recycle was paper and aluminum. Every week, my boyfriend and I would empty the bins and take the aluminum to the metal recycling yard. We got a few pennies for it – not really enough to buy the bags we used to transport the aluminum cans.

Nearly ten years later I was living in California and the dot-com boom was in full swing. Everybody was creating companies and websites and so was I. My first website was called “GreenBean.org”. It was a resource for teachers and intended as a clearinghouse for lesson plans, continuing education links, and funding sources.

About a year or so later, I had the idea for “GreenDex.org” and I bought the domain. I never found enough focus to really get the site up and running and I had to let go.

It’s 2018 now and we need to challenge the paradigm of consumerism more than ever. I’ve decided to give it another try but decided to start on a smaller scale. Since I live in the Florida Keys, I’ll concentrate on that area for now. There is only so much I can do as one person, but it is my hope that, as the site grows, I will find funding to hire more people to realize this dream of proving global information on sustainable living such as reducing our carbon footprint, switching to sustainable energy, finding sustainably farmed food, and getting involved in responsible natural resource management.

My first project will address single-use plastics. I will document my progress in blog format and I hope that there will be numerous responses with suggestions and advice from readers and supporters.

Thank you for coming here and thank you for supporting the possibility of a sustainable future for our children and the planet.
